BLACK HAIR RELAXERS

Black women have been facing the question, "To straighten or not to straighten?" for 200 years.  The original straighteners were made from lye that was used in soap making.  The first treatments for African American hair were made of very strong chemicals.  This led to burns on the scalp.

A number of hair straighteners were developed using various derivatives of sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, guanidine carbonate, thioglycolic acid and  lithium hydroxide.  All of these caustic chemical hair straighteners led to hair loss and damaged scalps.

The next generation were called hair relaxers and had "no base" formulas that were emulsified and easy to apply and could be left on the scalp longer before burning.  Weaker versions of the same formulas were marketed as texturizers and kiddie perms but if left on too long they would also lead to hair loss.

Because African Americas are very racially mixed, there are a variety of hair textures from curly to super-curly in Black people.  Black hair is described in many ways including curly, kinky, nappy, and woolly.  There are many ethnic hair types that are similar in texture to Black hair.  Many Jewish, Italian, French, Latino and Indian people have curly hair.  Caucasians and bi-racial and mixed children often have parents that don't know how to care for curly hair. Here is some information on CURL CARE.

Today there are many hair tools for straightening curly hair.  Almost every one has a blow dryer, flat iron and curling iron.  It takes skills to use a pressing comb. It is important to learn some hair straightening techniques and use caution when handling straightening irons.  Professional hairstylists are trained to use heat on hair and can better judge when the heat is adequate to straighten hair.  But, even they make mistakes.  The Edge-Wonder is a no-burn pressing comb that allows you to press your edges without burning your face. You can read about it here: EDGE-WONDER

  1. There have been many fad hair relaxers like the Japanese relaxer and the Brazilian hair relaxer.  They are very expensive and only temporary.  Natural hair relaxers made from honey or coconut or herbs do not really relax the hair.  The only natural hair relaxer that really works, is the Green-Wonders Naturalaxer Kit-In-A-Jar.
